That day is burned into my brain as I’m sure it is for so many people. Growing up my parents use to tell me how they remembered where they were when they heard that President Kennedy was killed.. Not until that day did I truly understand that feeling…and how it changes the world and the people in it.
My husband (then fiance) and I had a long night out with friends the night before so I decided to crash at his place. We both weren’t scheduled to work until that evening so we planned to sleep most of the day away. As we slept, his roommate was getting ready for work. It was a normal day.
Suddenly, we heard a knock at the bedroom door. My husband got up to see what was up. I heard them both speaking and then my husband turned to me and said that something had happen. We all made our way to the living room. His roommate continue to update us on what he had learned about the first tower being hit. No one knew what was going on. As I watched the t.v. I saw a plane come into view, and then disappear for a moment. Then the unthinkable happens…it hit the second tower.
I screamed at the guys to come and see. We all froze and stood in silence. Then we heard the news anchor say that we were under attack. Then time seemed to fly by and stand still all at once. I watched the t.v. for hours trying to understand what happened and kept hoping it wasn’t real. As evening drew near a candle light vigil was going to be held followed by a moment of silence. I ran to the store feeling the importance of this moment…I needed to be apart of it, I needed to do something.
I found three small candles; one red, one white, and one blue.
There was so much lost that day and not just in New York. I believe that all of us were touched, and were changed in some way. But I’m proud to see from that day to now, strangers coming together to rebuild, remember, and stand united.
